Earth Observation Phi-Week 2019

Our second participation to the Earth Observation Phi-Week (EO Φ-Week) was a lot about bringing the technology of EO to the ground. To businesses of all kinds. To people.

What’s the purpose of having all the data and all the resources, if they are being used only by a handful of people? Not to mention that all these investments and efforts might finally find more meaning and clients and become a profitable job, not just an interesting endeavour to outer space. That means opening up the data and the information gathered by satellites to the normal users, which leads us to regulations, frameworks, and teams to work on the best adoption strategies.

And, quite literally, sky might be the limit. Just think of the fact that as we speak we are gathering some tens of petabytes per year. 1 Petabyte equals 1 million Gigabytes. So we’re talking about a ginormous amount of data to store, process and interpret. That in itself is one of the biggest challenges there is.

In this captivating atmosphere, the Picturise team created a 300 x 120cm mural in the plenary, during the first day, and many smaller digital visuals, one for each thematic session of the next 3 days. A drawathon, as we like to call it. At the end of which we were, naturally, depleted. But it’s definitely a state worth the effort. And, despite it, we still had energy to go for a swim in the closest bay to Rome. Thank you, ESA, for the ride!
