The Fear of Missing Out (in short, FOMO) describes the anxiety that people experience when they believe others are having fun, doing exciting things, or enjoying experiences that they are not a part of. This fear is often triggered by social media, where people post about their activities, events or achievements. On one hand, it can motivate people to engage in new experiences and social interactions. On the other hand, it can contribute to stress, anxiety, and an unhealthy obsession with constantly staying connected and up-to-date on what others are doing. When it comes to teenagers, FOMO can affect their lives so much that they are literally glued to the screens of their smartphones.
Save the Children Romania (Salvați Copiii) is aware of this and wants to help youngsters and their parents and tutors understand what FOMO is, how it’s triggered, how it affects them, and how they can choose to free themselves from it and turn it into JOMO: the Joy of Missing Out.
