The Earth Observation Phi-Week (EO Φ-Week) was European Space Agency’s highlight conference, taking place in the fall and bringing together all stakeholders for whom Satellite is almost like a middle name.
The conference lasted for a whole week and was literally packed with information about space, research, data cubes, A.I. and everything involving the activity of the thousands of satellites orbiting the Earth. The event took place at ESA’s headquarters, in Frascati, the metropolitan area of Rome (Italy) and it brought together hundreds of Earth Observation enthusiasts who would spend hours on end talking about the things that we can now do with the help of these splendid technologies.
Which, in essence, do one thing only: elevate human activities. The basic action of satellites is taking photos of Earth. But the real magic comes from the computing power with which the data is being processed. The more computing power, the more possible it becomes to interpret those photos for the benefits of agriculture (e.g.: soil degradation, watering problems, managing pests etc.), climate change tracking, pollution, deforestation, defending from sea water piracy and so much more.
If you’s listen to these people long enough, you’d become a supporter yourself. Which we did and it was a beautiful, enriching and inspiring experience. We started the drawathon with a 300 x 120cm paper mural that beautifully captured the first days’s subjects. The enticing visual stayed there, displayed during the whole week, so everyone would get a chance to take a sneak peak, make photos and go in depth with the many details.
Then, for the next 4 days, we took turns, participating in each of the sessions that took place in the two workshops rooms and crafting digital visual maps about the presentations and discussion taking place. Thank you, ESA, for having us part of this!
